Maya Vik is a Norwegian singer, songwriter from Bergen — a real personality and a fashion icon. Known for blending music and fashion in creative ways, her work combines funk, R&B, synth pop and electronic elements, drawing inspiration from Prince, Janet Jackson, and 80s/90s groove culture. It was natural for us to write about Maya at The Rebirth Magazine.

Grace & Groove

Formerly the bassist for music bands Furia and Montée, Maya transitioned into a solo career where her style matured into funk-pop and nu-disco. Albums like “Château Faux-Coupe” and “Beyond the Basics” are sonically rich, featuring slick production and a strong visual component.

Her music videos are like fashion films — stylish, colorful, and often surreal.

Oslo Knows

We really discovered Maya when she came with the song “Oslo Knows” in 2011 — a slick groove that pays tribute to her hometown. A song that reminded us how important it is to take time to enjoy simple moments, reconnecting with nature and the elements that make Norwegian citizens come together.

ROTP: When did you have your first performance on stage?

Maya: My first time on stage was with my childhood friends in a band we called Pyrize. We entered a local talent show — and to our own surprise, we won! I was 15. My first performance as a solo artist happened in 2011. I was absolutely terrified — and honestly, a bit wasted. It wasn’t a great performance, but it was a wake-up call.

Beyond the Basics

Produced with big names in the music industry like Lindstrøm, this album marked a turning point in her career — a sharper, more polished pop-funk sound. Her music video for “Y.M.D. (Young Michael Douglas)” gained cult status for its retro visuals and clever 80s tribute.

After a nine-year hiatus, Maya returned with “Hustlebot” (2024) — characterized by 1980s synthpop and retrowave, reflecting her personal journey and artistic freedom. She wanted to make music on her own terms, without adapting to TikTok trends or radio formats.

Visual Identity

Maya is known for complete artistic direction over her visuals. She curates her wardrobe, themes, and video aesthetics. Her look is androgynous but feminine, edgy but elegant — always pushing boundaries.

Think of her as a Scandinavian cousin to Janelle Monáe, Little Dragon, or Roísín Murphy — artists who blend avant-garde style with experimental pop and funk.

Fashion as Self-Expression

ROTP: What do you think about fashion today? Do you see it as a form of self-expression or communication?

Maya: Absolutely, fashion is a way to express yourself. But I think that message gets lost a lot these days. Social media has flattened everything — the algorithm keeps feeding you versions of yourself, so you’re rarely challenged or surprised. That’s why I admire people who still dare to express something personal through what they wear.

ROTP: Is fashion about expressing identity or just owning expensive things?

Maya: It’s 100% about expressing identity. You can wear the most expensive, trendy designer piece out there — but that doesn’t mean you have taste, or style for that matter. Real fashion comes from individuality, not from price tags.

Maya Vik Baby Boo

A New Chapter

Her latest release in collaboration with Initial Talk fully embraces the New Jack Swing revival — a tribute to Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson, and early 90s R&B.

ROTP: It seems like a new you — can you tell us more about “Baby Boo”?

Maya: It’s actually a funny story. When I was finishing “Hustlebot”, my producer suggested Initial Talk to mix it. He turned out to be a longtime fan of my music — such a nice twist! After two remixes together, we felt it was time to create something original. Since we both love late 80s and early 90s R&B, doing a New Jack Swing-inspired track felt totally right. I added my friend Siri Stranger, and we wrote Baby Boo together — a bold and empowering anthem about confidence and desire.

“Rebirth means embracing the fact that you don’t have to be just one thing in life. Life has chapters, and you’re the one who gets to decide when it’s time to turn the page.”

What an artist.
What a personality.

Maya Vik embodies The Rebirth Magazine’s ethos — the courage to evolve, the grace to honor the past, and the imagination to create something entirely new. She is one of the few prominent female funk bassists and solo artists in Scandinavia, paving the way for others.

We could already see many collaborations with other artists ahead. She has such a unique style — we will absolutely not be surprised to hear her song on a Netflix series, a film, or a major campaign. This is just around the corner. Amazing Maya. Thanks for being who you are and always pushing boundaries.
